This is the third in my 2022 series featuring the mountains and valley that I call my home. I look at these mountains and this line of trees every single day while painting high above Paonia, Colorado in my home on a mesa overlooking the North Fork Valley.
I was inspired for this painting by the technique of the iconic paint by numbers artwork of the 1950s. Vintage paint by numbers canvases are marked by muted, chalky colors and a method of painting where each distinct shape and shadow is filled with an individual, flat pigment. This style has a sense of kitsch and mass-production, but the method of painting it is almost formal, rigid and precise.
I’ve included photos of this painting in process and in sample rooms and frames. The painting is acrylic on a wooden gesso board with a 1.5″ cradle. It is 18” x 24” with natural wood on the sides, wired in the back and ready to hang (no framing necessary). Please view all the photos to see its detail. By the time you read this, I may have placed the painting in a floater frame – just ask, and I’ll send photos, if so.
